Sunrise Yoga

If you’re looking to begin the day fresh by connecting with the breath, mind and body, as you set the tone for the rest of the day, a Sunrise Yoga practice can be just the right thing.

Yoga in general is a great way to start the morning, and a sunrise practice can improve both physical and mental well-being. A combination of hatha-vinyasa, the pace is rather meditative, emphasising on full body movement, strength and flexibility leading toward a boost of vitality.

The practice often begins in a seated meditation pose — for a deep sense of grounding. This allows for a clear and focused mind and sets the tone of mindfulness for the rest of the practice. It aids in organising your thoughts, getting rid of any mental clutter, and supports a better mind-body connection that follows you throughout the day as well.

A gentle warm-up follows; bringing movement and mobility from head to toe. Some of the poses are held for a little longer than others, and we typically take several rounds of deep breaths in each pose. Because of this mindful pace and focus, a Sunrise Yoga practice can be less intimidating for those who are complete beginners and even nursing minor injuries. The practice as a whole moves the body in various directions, increasing flexibility, range of motion, boosts the mood and helps increase your level of energy.

The following Surya Namaskars lend toward getting rid of morning muscle stiffness and tightness, stress you could be holding onto from the previous day, releases happy hormones, and boosts your body’s metabolism. It keeps the mind and body agile and strong. We also incorporate a few twists, forward folds, backbends, hip and heart openers, as well a ‘peak pose’ every now and then as part of the main sequence and cool down with a deeply relaxing savasana.

A Sunrise Yoga practice improves your level of focus and concentration, increases mental clarity, and ensures you are prepared for the rest of your day with a calm mind and a fueled spirit.

The class is appropriate for all levels of practitioners, including tight-bodied athletes, those with desk jobs and anyone who is struggling with finding time to move their body during the rest of the day.
